TMS for Prospective PhD Students

Figure 1. TMS for PhDs

My colleagues and I recently wrote a conceptual paper (forthcoming in the Journal of Higher Education Theory and Practice) that describes ways in which prospective doctoral students might develop teams in order to increase their collective chances of getting into doctoral programs. The paper was coauthored by 3 pre-doctoral fellows (Zakiyyah Ajigbeda, Crystal Allman, and Alicja Foksinska) and 2 mentors (Dr. George Munchus and Dr. Lonnie Hannon III) of the PhD Prep Lab.

The PhD Prep Lab (not to be confused with The PhD Project) is a basic and applied science startup founded in 2015 by Dr. Anthony C. Hood to complement the educational and workforce diversity efforts of the The PhD Project. The PhD Prep Lab offers underrepresented minorities and women hands-on research, training and mentoring opportunities in the areas of team-based science, leadership, innovation and entrepreneurship.

The work of the PhD Prep Lab is grounded in the emerging discipline of the Science of Team Science (SciTS). The current manuscript was previously accepted for presentation at the 2016 Science of Team Science (SciTS) Conference.

A recent report by the National Academies Press entitled Enhancing the Effectiveness of Team Science defines a team as “…two or more individuals with different roles and responsibilities, who interact socially and interdependently within an organizational system to perform tasks and accomplish common goals” (NAP report, p. Sum-1). Drawing on this definition of a team, team science refers to situations in which 2 or more people work together as a team on a research/science-related project such as writing manuscripts, collecting and analyzing data, writing/evaluating grant proposals, intellectual property commercialization, etc.
