#InnovateBham: A Discussion on Inclusive Innovation

Had a great time today speaking to the students of  Innovate Birmingham about #designthinking, #communityengagement, #inclusiveinnovation and #collectivephilanthropy. I have the pleasure of serving as a Co-Chair of Innovate Birmingham’s Community Engagement Work Group.

During the talk, I described ways in which philanthropic organizations such as the Birmingham Change Fund and the Community Investment Network use design thinking to support #socialentrepreneurship and #economicdevelopment in our communities.

I reminded the students that Innovate Birmingham exists in part due to grants and the philanthropic support of many in our community. Further, we defined philanthropy as an investment of one’s #time, #talent, #treasure and/or #testimony (i.e. the “4Ts”) towards the benefit of others.

I left them with a challenge—to see themselves as philanthropists and to seek opportunities to operate on the #supply side (4T #givers) of #philanthropy as opposed to the #demand side (4T #receivers).
